How to Compare Health Insurance Plans

Today it’s more complicated than ever to navigate the health insurance landscape. You need to choose the best plan for your family and your particular needs, and it can be complicated as policies continue to grow and change. Here is a basic guide to comparing health insurance plans so you can be confident you’ve selected the best plan possible!

First, understand the different types of plans.

There are many different types of plans to consider when choosing the right plan for your family. They can get confusing quickly which is why it’s important you take the time to fully understand the different types of plans and the benefits of each. The best way to understand the basics of each plan is to look at the summary of benefits so you can see the cost and what is covered.

One of the most common types of health insurance plans is HMO which stands for Health Maintenance Organization. These plans are best for lower out-of-pocket costs and a primary in-network doctor who helps you navigate other specialists. Another common plan type is a PPO which means Preferred Provider Organization. While you don’t have to stay in-network with these plans, network care is less expensive. This is good for those who want more provider options and don’t want to need referrals for special care.

These are only a few of the popular plan options, so you’ll need to do your research about the best option for you. Consider the amount of treatment you anticipate your family will need, and go from there. What have you received in the past? What worked and what didn’t? Ask yourself these questions and more to get started with this decision process.

Second, consider the different health plan networks.

When considering a health insurance plan, you need to compare the different networks to decide what’s best for you. If you already have a trusted doctor, you’ll probably want to find a network in which they’re already included. Staying within a network is an easy way to keep costs down, but it will also require greater challenges if you do need to go out of network for any reason.

Consider the networks available where you live. If you live in a rural area, you might want a plan with more network options so you can have a greater range of choices. Check your local doctors and specialists to see what plans are accepted in your area.

Third, what are your out-of-pocket expenses?

Not all health insurance plans cover everything. There will be expected out-of-pocket costs which you should factor in your decision process. The summary of benefits for your chosen plan should articulate just how much you’re expected to pay out of pocket for particular services. If you have a chronic health condition, these expenses can quickly become expensive, which is why it’s important to fully understand all costs before committing to a plan.

Finally, compare your benefits.

The last step in choosing your plan is to decide on your benefits. Some plans offer coverage for things like mental health care or physical therapy, for instance, which might be a benefit that appeals to your unique needs. Other plans might offer greater coverage in case of emergency. The benefits of some plans aren’t always applicable to your situation, so compare health insurance plans to find the right choice for you.

Choosing the right health insurance is easier than ever.

With so many online search tools and information, it’s getting easier to choose the best health insurance for your needs. As long as you do your research and understand the basics of the health insurance industry, you’re in a good place to select quality care for the least cost.
