5 Tips to Protect your Home from Water Damage

hole-216131_640You may not take the first few signs of water damage seriously however water stains on the ceilings or leaks under the kitchen sink can lead to real problems like rotten floorboards or a weakened roof. Even a burst pipe can damage your furniture and other personal possessions. But why take the chance? If you figure out which part of your home is most likely to suffer water damage, you can protect your home from damages.

Whether you experience a flooding water leak or a small unnoticed water leak, the damage can be devastating. Here’s a few tips you can do to protect your home from water damage:

  1. Check hoses and faucets on a regular basis. Professionals recommend checking hoses that lead to your dishwasher, washing machine and your refrigerator on an annual basis, looking for cracks or water leaks. It’s also recommended to replace hoses every five to seven years.
  1. Know when (and where) to shut off your main water source. If a pipe suddenly bursts in your home, it’s important to know how to shut off the water supply to avoid any further damage. In most situations, shutting down the main water source will stop the flow of water.
  1. Check your basement, water heater and utility room. Check for bulges or cracks on the hoses and when you see wet spots on the floor or a rusted water heater tank, it may signal that there’s a leak. Water heaters should be located or installed in the lowest level of the home.
  1. Install floor pans. Consider installing floor pans under your appliances. This is a great precaution that can prevent damage from slow, undetected leaks.
  1. Consider purchasing a basement dehumidifier. Moisture in your home is a good thing but when it reaches a certain level, it can be harmful. Basement dehumidifiers can help as basements are often the part of the home that becomes to humid and gets a musty smell. Homes that are old has that musty smell which sometimes cannot be treated with just chemicals. That is another sign of water damage. If you want quality commercial dehumidifiers, Aer Industries can offer you a variety of choices for your needs.

Aside from doing these steps, here’s a list of common causes of plumbing leaks that can lead to water damage in our homes that you will need to watch out for:

  • Water heaters
  • Ice makers
  • Toilets
  • Showers and tubs

  • Sinks

Stopping leaks at the source is ideal. Be sure to consider the basics outlined here to protect your home from water damage. Keeping an eye out for problems can save you thousands of dollars for costly repairs, save your possession from damage and even keep your insurance premiums low. Check frequently around the house for signs of leaks even if these precautions have been implemented in your home as it’s important to find them before they can cause serious damage.
