Want To Break Free From The 9 To 5, Start Your Alternative Career Exploration

Alternative Career Exploration

I hear so many folks say how worn out they are from their 9 to 5 obligation, that all they want to do is come home and veg on the couch!  That sounds like a depressing existence!  I say “don’t you have any hobbies, passions or goals outside of your 9 to 5 which may lead to your doing something else as a career”.  Often times I get a chuckle in return, as if to say, why would I consider having a passion lead to a career option!  This is sad to me, where does this thought process resonate from?  It got me to thinking, does the 9 to 5 career steal valuable time and energy from the passions in life?  Don’t get me wrong I certainly realize the demands people have, especially with children involved.  Come on though, I know most of us have time to sit in front of the TV, why not use that time as Alternative Career Exploration?   I often find myself thinking about this, and maybe it is because I write on this blog.  But, for those who are unhappy with their 9 to 5, use that veg time to explore alternate methods for making money, and who knows where it could lead to.  The PF community offers lots of great posts on how to make a living out of doing what you love.

For some people it seems that working the 9-5 results in the death of life’s ambitions.  You trade a potentially steady paycheck for a hollow existence, void of passion and zeal.  With the 9 to 5 to 65 mindset we get conditioned to slave away our time without any direct reward for our actions.  It seems many of us zombie through our work life with little reward, and our personal growth is therefore stymied.   The 9 to 5 to 65 is typically a situation where you are a w2 employee.  This is not a secure position to be in, I mean you are vulnerable, someone else has the authority to effectively turn off all your income just by saying two words (“You’re fired”).  Does this sound like a safe and secure situation to you?  Does having only one income stream honestly sound more secure than having 10?  So how do we change it?

Start with De-conditioning

De-condition your mindset.   Society has us believing that the only way to a successful career, is by going to a traditional 4 year institution. Hooey!  Colleges are in the business of making money, yes even public institutions are.  In order to make dough, colleges need students, the government needs to subsidize student loans, corporations need to sell you things.  As a result the perpetuation of this mythical mindset is collaborated by a whole host of entities.  Don’t buy it, college is not your only option.  In today’s age of information, and freedom the internet offers,  you can create a business overnight, literally!

Find the Courage to Live Consciously

In our day-to-day lives, the virtue of courage doesn’t receive much attention. Courage is a quality reserved for soldiers, firefighters, and activists. Security is what matters most today. Perhaps you were taught to avoid being too bold or too brave. It’s too dangerous. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Don’t draw attention to yourself in public. Follow family traditions. Don’t talk to strangers. Keep an eye out for suspicious people. Stay safe.  Reduce the power of that inner voice telling you, that you could fail, or that you cant make enough to support your lifestyle.  Tips to reducing the power of that inner voice:
